This East Bay beauty, an hour’s drive from San Francisco, pays homage to Norman French architecture (think massive castles). The 138 rooms, called “overlarge” on the hotel brochure, are unusually spacious and sumptuous for anyone visiting the exclusive Lamorinda suburbs (Lafayette, Moraga, Orinda and Walnut Creek). But I made a day of it with lunch, massage, and a little lounging by the pool.

The Lafayette Hotel’s first floor holds two restaurants with a rather masculine European design: the Duck Club and the Bistro at the Park. The Duck Club has sprawling, cushy booths, fireplaces and beautiful dishes, many with edible flowers.

I ate there with a friend and thoroughly enjoyed being able to hear what my table mate was saying (a rarity in restaurants these days). The service was formal, yet personable and my Forest Mushroom Farfalle with fresh vegetables, shallots and goat cheese was light and flavorful.

With views of the coral colored roses in the courtyard, both restaurants are comfortable to the point of being a concern. You can easily lose track of time and miss your spa appointment, as we came close to doing!

The Lafayette Park Hotel’s Intimate Third Floor Spa

The hotel’s intimate spa sits on the third floor adjacent to a patio of relaxation: sparkling pool, sauna, hot tub, fireplace, workout room and dining service. Later, I couldn’t put my finger on which I loved more: my top tier treatment? Or an hour of sinking into a chaise surrounded by gorgeous Bay Area summer weather?

My European massage, confidently given by a petite but surprisingly strong therapist, was excellent. She employed slow, firm strokes that released knots in my lower back that I had learned to ignore (almost) and asked periodically (without being intrusive) if I was comfortable or warm enough. The room’s surrounding quiet was more than sufficient to “make the world go away”.

The spa has five treatment rooms and a sixth set aside specifically for couples massages. A sizable selection of services are available including facials, wraps, exfoliation and deep tissue, prenatal and aromatherapy massage. Packages include a Half Day Spa Retreat, Midweek Spa Specials and a Runaway & Play Overnight Spa Package for two.

The diminutive size of the beautiful dressing room with not a steam room in sight is to be expected in a small hotel spa. But it was jarring to be regularly interrupted by foot traffic coming and going through the otherwise relaxing spa lounge.

Lafayette Park Hotel & Spa : Cheaper Than A Trip To France

After my treatment, I took one whole step out of the spa and onto the plethora of pool patio fun that lazed under a California blue sky (July and August are over 80 degrees; other months plan on snuggling next to the outdoor fireplace and check temps before you pack).

One more step and I was sinking into a lounge chair and a Vogue with not a care in the world that I was about to be late for a meeting back in the real world. In beautiful weather, lounge chairs are at a premium so arrive early in the day. And bathing suits are required since men, women, and very polite children, will also be enjoying the pool.

The Bottom Line: This luxury property outside of San Francisco can be counted on to hit the ball out of the park every time with grand guest rooms, memorable dining and a spa that strives to meet the highest of standards. Plan to spend, at the minimum, two hours at this outstanding hotel spa (three or four if you can swing it). If I lived in Lamorinda, I’d calendar in a visit to the Lafayette at least once or twice a year. Way cheaper and less stressful than flying to France.
